Make our Halloween cupcakes for your kids to be spooky. With black velvet sponges and frightening faces created with simple frosting techniques, they're frighteningly delicious

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Bake at 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Prepare two cupcake tins that have 12-holes with cupcake cases. Beat the sugar and butter until the mixture becomes creamy. Add the chocolate and eggs until well-combined, then add the flour, baking powder and cocoa powder food coloring and milk If you wish to use. Divide the mixture equally between the cases of cupcakes, sprinkling the tops.
  2. Bake for 20 minutes to ensure that the cakes are firm and springy. Let them cool for 5 minutes in the tin, then transfer onto an uncooked wire rack to let them cool completely.
  3. In order to make butter cream mix the butter with a mixer until it is soft and then mix in the icing sugar, a tiny amount at each time. Add vanilla, along with some black food coloring, and then transfer the mixture to a piping bag with an ordinary nozzle.
  4. For the cat's face make a swirl of black frosting on the cupcake, then smooth it with the help of a palette knife. Create two ears using creating the blobs for each and then pulling the icing bag up until it reaches an angle. Make two eyes for each using Smarties. Use the black icing pen paint a pupil on each. Make a triangle nose out of pink fondant icing , and make whiskers using sweets.
  5. To make the monsters for the monsters, cut circles of blue and green fondant to fit over the tops of the cupcakes and then secure them with a bit of buttercream. Make eyes, noses and mouths made from sugar or the icing eyes (see tips below). To make skeletons, cut designs using white fondant and stick them in place using buttercream.
